La Scoperta della Grotta
On 29th May 1931 during some works of excavation to buil a sewerage, at a few metres from the inhabitated centre of Putignano, some workers found a wonder of the nature: a big 'cave of stalactites and stalagmites'.
On 28th June 1931 the Superintendence to the works of Antiquity and art of Apulia asked to the Office of the National Education to be able to set under guardianship the Cave of Putignano according to the L. 11/06/22 n. 778s.
After less than three months, the Grottoes of Putignano were declared subject to a special protection whose maintenance introduces a notable public interest because of their natural beauty.
La costruzione dei trulli
Grottoes of Putignano became the first tourist site in Apulia where visitors have the possibility to immerse themselves in a 'hidden place', to admire all the nature has drawn years after years.
In some historical documents there is written that tourists increased more and more so that trulli and the spiral staircase which brings to the grotto were built on April 1934. Trulli are very important because they are necessary as a refreshment stand for visitors.
The construction of trulli is as important as grottoes because they both are symbols of our region and, thanks to their presence, this underground treasure of Putignano was called 'THE GROTTO OF THE TRULLO'.
L'inaugurazione
The official inauguration of 'the Grotto of the Trullo' was on 21st June 1935 in presence of the tallest position of the city and the region and the King of Italy Vittorio emanuele III of Savoia ufficiated it. This testifies how much the opening of this site to visitors was important at that time.
